Sheltered Housing

What is Sheltered Housing?

Sheltered housing is mainly for older people who want to lead independent lives in their own homes, while being able to call on help and support in an emergency.

This help is provided either by a Scheme Manager or the Central Control Office where emergency calls are directed.

When any emergency arises, a resident can call for assistance by pulling a cord in their homes which is linked to an intercom system. This call will either go to the Scheme Manager if s/he is on duty or otherwise to the Central Control Office.

What does the Scheme Manager do?

The Scheme Manager’s role is that of "a good neighbour", providing support and assistance without interference in the lives of residents.

The Scheme Manager will:

  • make daily contact with residents (if this is their wish) to ensure their health and well-being. When the Warden is not on duty, residents will receive this daily contact from the Central Control Office;
  • answer emergency calls and seek appropriate help and assistance as necessary;
  • contact relatives in case of illness;
  • contact a resident’s doctor;
  • manage the general running of the housing scheme;
  • co-ordinate communal activities within the Scheme e.g., coffee mornings, general social activities, etc. (Residents do not have to take part in these activities);
  • forward repair requests to the Association’s office;
  • maintain a record of each resident’s doctor and next of kin;
  • liaise with support services e.g., Social Services, Meals on Wheels, etc.:
  • Assist residents to settle into the housing scheme and offer advice and assistance in accessing support services;
  • hold all master keys and safe keys for the housing scheme;
  • regularly liaise with the Housing Officer in respect of all management issues.

The Scheme Manager will not:

  • handle a resident's finances;
  • administer medication;
  • provide personal care;
  • carry out nursing duties;
  • go shopping on a resident's behalf;
  • collect prescripitons.
